LAUGARVATN, ÍSLAND

In 2023 I spent two months in creative residency at Gullkistan Center for Creativity in Laugarvatn, Iceland. My goals were to “unteach” myself any rigid processes ingrained during graduate school by slowing my means of production and opting for a completely analog screen printing syllabus. I treated my screens like my notebook; doodling, improvising, and fucking up without any consequence. I began Nytthus with a fellow graphic design resident; Anu Kristal-Unt from Estonia. She + I found a symbiotic workflow that inspired both of us. We’d drink espresso + smoke cigarettes while complaining about the other residents, laughing as we went insane from isolation.
Towards the end of my time I went to Milan during Design Week, where I met with dutch graphic designer + friend; Mark Van Winengan, founder of Novo Typo. His practice heavily inspired my own during my residency, as he creates his own inks, printing blocks, papers, and tools. I used his typeface, ZIZA, as the stencil for practically all my type-based work during my residency.
